A mechanical watch should always be protected from shocks, extreme temperatures and magnetic fields. You should only use special cleaning agents and leave the opening of the watch to a watchmaker. In addition to these basic recommendations, there are valuable tips - especially for mechanical watches - that are guaranteed to extend the life of your wristwatch.

Tip 1: elevator

Regardless of whether you have an automatic watch or a hand-wound watch: a mechanical watch always requires manual winding. Before using for the first time and after long periods of rest, you should have your Automatic watch fully open - moving your wrist alone is not enough. And trust us, the spring cannot be overturned when winding an automatic watch, as it is protected by a slip clutch.

Once a month, it is recommended that automatic watches be wound manually over the crown, despite the movement on your wrist. In this way, the gear values can be improved and the power reserve increased.

You have a mechanical one Hand-wound watch? Then put the crown in the correct position and pull the watch up until resistance is felt. Usually 30 to 40 revolutions are necessary for this.

Note: On mechanical watches, never set the date when the hour hand is between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM. Since the movement itself is still in the switching mechanism during this period, the movement can be damaged.

Tip 2: accuracy of your mechanical watch

When you put your watch down, you can do so in different positions and thus influence the accuracy of your watch to a certain extent (max. 2 seconds per day). You should take off your mechanical watch, especially at night to sleep and exercise, as the body then tends to sweat more, which can lead to unwanted chemical reactions on the case and bracelet. Feel free to try out the different positions for accuracy:

Crown on top: The clock runs slower due to greater resistance.
Dial below: The watch runs faster because there is the least amount of friction.

If you have several mechanical watches in your possession, we recommend using a watch winder. In our online shop you will discover a large selection in many price ranges, such as this elegant watch winder for two watches by Paul Design.

A watch winder benefits the longevity and accuracy of your mechanical watch. Our recommendation: Let the watch winder run for one to two hours only once a day. This keeps the fine mechanism of your watch sufficiently in motion.

Tip 3: chronograph function

A chronograph is a watch with the option of short-term measurement (stop function). You can usually recognize a chronograph by three totalizers (sub-dials) on the dial and the pushers on the side. These buttons are used to start and stop the measurement (top button) and to reset to zero (bottom button).

Please note:
The reset to zero may only take place after the chronograph has stopped! The two pushers must never be pressed at the same time, as this could damage the chronograph function!

Tip 4: watertightness

The operating instructions for your watch tell you up to how many meters it is waterproof. Depending on the model, you can wear your watch carefully when washing your hands or dive into the depths of the oceans with it. Please keep the crown of your watch pressed in or screwed in when you wear it. You should never pull or unscrew the crown or press the pushers underwater.

The water resistance of a watch should checked every two years by a specialist watch company. We are happy to offer you this service in our in-house watchmaking shop. If water does get inside the watch, it is necessary to go to the watchmaker immediately.

Tip 5: watch service

Every five to eight years High-quality, mechanical watches should receive an overhaul, because they generate more abrasion than other watches and therefore require more care. Special attention is paid to the maintenance of the movement. This is completely dismantled, cleaned and oiled and defective clockwork parts are replaced. It is then reassembled and adjusted.

On request, scratches on the case, metal bracelet and clasp can also be polished out or filled in at the watch service. You can find more details in our blog post “Overview of watch service: costs, duration and necessity”.
