Prior to travel


When applying for a visa, the passport must be valid for at least 6 months and until after departure. The national driving license is not a valid border document.

Special documents
Different provisions may apply to holders of special documents (e.g. service or diplomatic passports, etc.). Therefore, please inform the responsible representative authority (see "Important addresses") or on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


A visa is required for entry, which must be applied for at the representative authority responsible for Austria (see "Important addresses"). The processing time is up to 4 weeks. In individual cases, an extension of the visa is possible on site.

If the outward or return journey is via China, a Chinese transit visa is required. It is not possible to enter North Korea via South Korea.

Travelers must be able to prove that they have left the country (return or onward ticket) and have sufficient funds for their stay.

The International driving license is not valid in North Korea. Resident foreigners must obtain a local driver's license.

Import regulations

The following items can be imported into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea duty-free:

200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco;
1 bottle of spirits.

Import ban

It is forbidden to import cell phones without a North Korean mobile phone contract or a North Korean SIM card, weapons, ammunition, media (books and printed material in Korean, photos, videos, storage media, etc.), explosives, drugs and plant seeds.
