How do you tell an emergency lie
Truth or Fake: Can You Also Know Lies?
"You are a bad liar," is a satisfactory way to say to someone who you can tell immediately if they are not telling the truth. Then there are the mediocre liars and those who have mastered it. "I would really take on your shift if I didn't have an important invitation to dinner that evening," says it and in truth just doesn't feel like it.
Small white lies or cheating are usually no big deal. We use them in order not to hurt others, in order to diplomatically deceive ourselves past an unpleasant truth or simply because it is polite to say or do something in a certain situation. The boring meeting was “totally productive” and the mediocre appointment with the customer was “very enjoyable”. Some types of lies are socially accepted and - hand on heart - who does not like to use little falsehoods to avoid a collegial quarrel or family drama. Many people fall back on small or large lies to make their everyday lives easier. Imagine what it would be like if everyone just kept telling the truth. It becomes problematic when lying becomes a habit or when your fellow human beings want to gain an advantage for themselves. With a little practice and attention, you can develop a sense of whether you are being told the truth.
On the trail of small and large lies
A lie doesn't have to be outright untruth. You can cheat your way past the truth in various ways, from outright lies to diversionary maneuvers to withholding certain information. The following signs can Indicate if someone is telling the truth or is tying you up with a bear:
- Changed body language and facial expressions
Telling the lie is relatively easy, controlling facial expressions and gestures is much more difficult. A liar is therefore more likely to be discovered by his behavior than by what is said. The better you know a person, the easier it is for you to determine whether they are behaving in an unusual way: For example, a colleague has trouble maintaining eye contact, although he usually does this when talking to you - or vice versa: while he is telling you his lie he keeps eye contact for an unusually long time. But be careful: Increasing nervousness in the course of a conversation does not necessarily indicate a lie - this is what the Othello Effect says.
- Sparing with information
Maintaining a construct of lies is time-consuming. There are contradictions, nasty questions lurking and as a liar you have to think about different perspectives. Not just your own, but also those of others. The more complicated the lie, the harder it is to keep it up. Those who tell the untruth tend to save on details and formulate their untruth in a more general way. By asking specific questions, you can perhaps lure your counterpart from the reserve, because with every new question he has to come up with a plausible answer.
- Difficulty remembering details
If you lie, you have to remember a lot of things. If you think you might be dealing with a liar in the long run, pay attention and remember as many details as possible. Coupled with regular inquiries, the liar may get entangled in contradictions.
- Counter questions or evade
When asked again, liars often respond with counter-questions or evasive answers. When asked, “You really don't know where the project folder has gone. You were the last to have it? ”You might just hear a“ Oh, you know how chaotic it can be in the office ”or“ Why do you need it today? ”
- Delay tactic
Anyone who is on the verge of being exposed as a liar has to buy time. The liar gains valuable seconds, among other things, by literally repeating a question asked. "Did you notice the dent on the company car?" - "Did I notice the dent on the company car?" He can also delay his answer by pretending not to understand the question. In some situations, however, you realize that he heard exactly what you asked.
And one last tip: Don't slide into paranoia when searching for lies. If it's not about a big deal anyway: Admit one or the other small white lie to others, even if you recognize them.
