Walter Elias Disney

Training:Walt attended drawing and photography classes while in high school. During the First World War he was an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in France. He then worked in an advertising agency before going into business shortly afterwards.


Disney's life

Walt Disney was already interested in drawing as a boy and sold his pictures to friends and relatives. After Walt first wanted to pursue a career as a draftsman with a daily newspaper, he made a decision early on: he made his first experiences with animation and, together with his brother Roy and the caricaturist Ubbe Iwerks, produced short films.

His first full-length film is "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" in 1937. The film becomes one of the great Disney classics - Walt Disney receives the first of a total of 26 Oscars for it! Other well-known Disney films are "Bambi" (1942), "Sleeping Beauty" (1959) and the documentary "The Desert Lives" (1953).

Every child knows the cartoon characters Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, Pluto and Goofy. In 1955 the theme park "Disneyland" opened in California. In 1971, five years after his death, Walt Disney World was opened by Walt's brother Roy.

His family

Walt's father is of Irish-Canadian descent, his mother has German roots. Walt has four siblings - three brothers and a sister. He worked with his brother Roy all his life. In 1925, Walt married Lilian Bounds. The two have two daughters.


Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse is best known for the film "Steamboat Willie". The film premiered on November 18, 1928. The day is therefore also Mickey Mouse's official birthday. Walt Disney gave his voice to Micke Mouse until 1946.

By the way: The well-known mouse should actually be called "Mortimer". But Walt's wife Lilian finds the name too pompous and suggests "Mickey" instead.
