Lahore (Agenzia Fides) - Dialogue and Muslim-Christian relations are also based on mutual participation in the most important festivals of the other religion. That is why the Franciscans in Lahore organized an interreligious celebration for the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed, during which Christians and Muslims also exchanged Christmas greetings. This is reported by Father Victor Sawera, OFM, who organized the celebration.
“We read excerpts from the Bible and the Koran. Muslim religious representatives prayed the evening prayer in the chapel of the Franciscan Center. There were also various imams present, including Syed Abdul Khabir Azad from the Royal Mosque in Lahore, who greatly appreciated the celebrations for the Prophet's birthday in a Christian house: we wanted to be a role model for all citizens of Pakistan, ”said Father Sawera, recalling that "interreligious dialogue and the promotion of peace and harmony are anchored in the DNA of Franciscan spirituality", emphasizing that "more needs to be done for peace and harmony between countries and religions. We Franciscans are called to to work as a bridge builder ”.
The same spirit inspired a Christmas party held at the Pakistani embassy in Rome in the past few days: Ambassador Nadeem Riyyaz invited to a celebration attended by Pakistani seminarians, sisters and religious who study in Rome and representatives of the religious houses and have communities in Pakistan.
Father Robert McCulloch, Superior General of the Mission Society of St. Columban, thanked the Pakistani ambassador for his willingness to host a Christmas party and congratulated him on Eid-e-Milad-ul-Nabi, the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed. The Christmas party in the Pakistani embassy in Rome is taking place for the fifth time: for the first time, Ambassador Tehmina Janjua, who represents Pakistan today at the United Nations in Geneva, organized such a celebration under the sign of harmony between the religions. Both ambassadors have visited Catholic schools in Pakistan.
