What are the problems in indirect democracy

Representative democracy

The people determine

Germany is a democracy. That means that citizens exercise rulership in the country. Above them there is neither an emperor nor a king, neither a dictator nor a ruler. All state power emanates from the people, so it is in our Basic Law.

Representatives of the people

However, we do not exercise this democratic power directly ourselves. Rather, we choose people and parties whose ideas roughly match ours. We trust them to be able to rule us for a while. So we send our representatives (in German: representatives) to the people's representatives, for example to the Bundestag, so that they act in our interests there. That is why one speaks of a “representative democracy”.

Direct democracy

Another type of democracy is direct democracy, as it is, for example, in our neighboring country Switzerland. There, the citizens vote for their representatives in the parliamentary elections, as they do with us. In addition, however, citizens who are entitled to vote can directly decide on important political decisions in referendums.
