The German History in Documents and Images (DGDB) is a comprehensive collection of digitized sources on German history from the early modern period to the present. The complete work consists of ten sections, each dealing with a period of German history. All sections have been edited by leading specialists and each contain the following parts:
  • an introduction to central developments in the German social, political and cultural history of the relevant period,
  • selected sources (in German and English),
  • selected image sources that originate from or relate to the respective period and
  • selected map material.

The following categories were used as a basis for the selection of documents and image sources: government and administration; Parties and organizations; Military and war; Economy and work; Nature and environment; Gender, family and generations; Region, city and country; Religion;
Literature, art and music; Elite and popular culture; Science and education.

All materials are accessible through the keyword, key word and author search. With the help of the extended search function, the search can be specified or restricted.

Many of the documents included here are difficult to access in conventional publications, especially outside of Germany. All German-language documents in the source collection are supplemented by an English translation that was specially prepared for this project. DGBD also offers access to a wide range of historically significant and, for the most part, little-known image sources.
