The American NU metal band Slipknot was founded in 1995 in Des Moines (Iowa, USA). The name means running knot in German.
In 1992 Shawn Crahan, Anders Colsefini and Paul Gray started making music together in Colsefini's basement. Some of the tracks made it onto the demo album "Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat.". The original band name was The pale ones, only for a short time they called themselves for their first appearances in Meld around. The idea for the current band name Slipknot came from drummer Joey Jordinson.
During the further recordings for the first demo album, the band also worked on their image. They started wearing grotesque make-ups and developed a kind of anti-image, which then led to them even wearing masks. Donnie Steele left Slipknot because of his Christian faith. Most of the early gigs took place at the reggae club "The Safari".
On July 8th, 1998 the band signed their first record deal with Roadrunner Records. On June 29th, 1999 Slipknot released their self-titled debut album. Critics rated the band as particularly tough. The album reached platinum status and was listed by the British music magazine Q as one of the 50 hardest albums of all time.
The second album under the title "Iowa" landed at number three on the US album charts and at the top of the British. Rolling Stone Magazine's David Fricke called Slipknot's new album the first great recording of the NU Metal era. After most of the band members also devoted themselves to side projects in 2002, there were rumors that the group had split up.
The third studio album called "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)" was released on May 24th, 2004. Paul Gray later referred to it as the rebirth of Slipknot. In 2006 the band received a Grammy for "Before I Forget".
"All Hope Is Gone" is the group's fourth album and was released in summer 2008. Slipknot went into the studio with the intention of making it the band's toughest album. A tour with Machine head and Children Of Bodom was planned for the fourth quarter of 2008.
The image of Slipknot caused a lot of excitement and discussion, especially the changing masks and uniforms. The band claims to wear the masks in order to get away from themselves and to focus their interest solely on the music. The fact that the members appear outside the group without the masks was also criticized.
After the death of bassist Paul Gray in the early summer of 2010 due to an overdose of painkillers, James Root announced that the band would take a break of at least two years. However, it was later announced that Slipknot would both complete the work on the fifth studio album and perform at various festivals.
In 2014, to the delight of their fans, the band finally released a studio album again after a six-year hiatus. ".5: The Gray Chapter" made it to number two on the album charts in Germany.
